About this archive

SmallTownLiving.eu is an information archive focused on life in Italian municipalities with fewer than 5,000 residents. It was built to fill a gap: most coverage of rural Italy concentrates on tourism, property investment, or lifestyle aspirations. This resource concentrates on documented administrative realities.

What this resource contains

The archive covers three main areas: public service availability (healthcare, schools, postal services, municipal offices), social infrastructure (markets, associations, religious calendars, generational demographics), and physical infrastructure (road condition, broadband access, water and waste systems, building stock age).

Each section draws on ISTAT census releases, regional council reports, national infrastructure assessments, and, where cited, academic studies published by Italian universities or EU-funded research bodies.

Editorial approach

Entries are written in a neutral descriptive register. No scores, rankings, or recommendations are assigned. The aim is to present conditions as they are recorded, with appropriate caveats where data is incomplete or geographically uneven.

Italy's 7,904 municipalities differ enormously within the under-5,000 category. A comune in Alto Adige with 3,200 residents operates under quite different fiscal and administrative conditions than one in Calabria of the same size. Where relevant, regional and provincial distinctions are noted.

Data currency

Population figures are drawn from ISTAT's municipal registry as of the most recent available release (generally 1 January of the preceding year). Infrastructure data reflects the most recently published national or regional surveys. Pages note their last review date at the top.

Contact and corrections

Factual corrections and additional data submissions are welcomed. If a figure is outdated or an official source has been superseded, use the contact form on the home page or write to info@smalltownliving.eu.
